Plot
Emilia Pérez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as herself. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that characterized this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and about the two extremes of her personality that she had to interpret as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said that the idea for the musical came from a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who longs to change his identity. A French headline misspells the Indian city as “Dehli”. Featured in Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna SPICY & Selena shock! (2024). Dalmais), Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Starring Zoe Saldana.
This is pure madness
My second favorite Cannes film after “The Substance” (I didn’t see “Anora”). A musical about Mexican drug dealers and corruption??? WTF??? “Emilia Perez” is really creative. It mixes many genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but it does it in a very good and entertaining way. It’s also extremely original and surprisingly exciting. Here is a character who has a heartwarming and heartbreaking journey throughout the film. I won’t go into details.
Gascon plays the main role
It’s not really a spoiler because it’s revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the movie, but I didn’t know that and it shocked me that this movie took that direction. So I advise you not to read the description and go watch it completely blind if you want to get the best possible experience. The best thing about this “Emilia Perez” is definitely the performances. For her 4 roles (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz) she won the best actress award at Cannes. Saldana plays the main character and has many intense and striking scenes (especially the musical ones). I’m glad that after so much success, he finally got a role where he could show his acting skills. He’s kind of a supporting character, but he’s really the heart of the movie and the whole plot revolves around him. Gomez and Paz were good, but I’m surprised they even won the Palma: their performances weren’t as great and memorable as Saldana and Gascon’s.
“Emilia Perez” is not for everyone
Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive. This movie is elegant and looks good. I love the photography and the soundtrack. Not everything works perfectly, and there were a few moments where I wasn’t completely convinced, but most of the time I enjoyed it and was blown away by its craziness, inventiveness, and originality. I’m not a huge fan of musicals, but the musical scenes (of which there aren’t many) in that movie are engaging and very well choreographed and shot, which makes them enjoyable. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are about vaginoplasty and the taste of Coke). Some people walked out, others thought it was one of the worst films of the festival, others loved it (including me). The general public will not like it.
We support weird and niche cinema
The closest movie I’ve seen to this is Leos Carax’s “Annette”. “Emilia Perez” is more of a crowd pleaser, but will still be missed by many. But I still encourage you to check it out.
